Empowering Women

This month, there is a day to celebrate women, stand up for women and appreciate the effort of women. Women’s rights and gender equality are gradually recognised with the emergence of feminist activists.

Who are the ones that came into your mind?

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter

“Who Run the World? Girls!”

Beyonce sings for women’s rights.

Some of her famous songs:

  • Irreplaceable
  • Flawless
  • Single Ladies
  • Run the World (Girls)

As her song “Run the World” goes

“Boy you know you love it

How we’re smart enough

To make these millions

Strong enough to bear the children

Then get back to business”

Beyonce, with her songs, reflected women’s ability to nurture a family and also get back into the corporate world, portraying women’s resilience in life.

Emma Watson

‘I’m a feminist because I’ve known sexism since I was eight years old’

You may recognise her as the intelligent Hermione Granger from Harry Potter that fought side by side with Harry to defeat Lord Voldemort.

Quite recently, she also played the headstrong “Belle” in Beauty and the Beast that stood up to save her father.

Through her acting, she reflected how women, like men, can contribute to the world.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

“Begin to dream about and plan for a different world, a fairer world, a world of happier men and happier women who are truer to themselves.”

Chimamanda is a Nigerian novel author who defines “feminism” in the 21st century in her book “We should all be

feminists”.

During the TEDxEuston in 2017, she highlighted the gender inequality issues that are common in Nigeria and ends her talk by quoting feminism as “a man or a woman who says, “Yes, there is a problem with gender as it is today, and we must fix it. We must do better.”

Despite the effort on women’s rights, these problems still exist around the world!

  • Women sex trafficking and sex slaves
  • Refused for education and political participation
  • High death rates due to pregnancy and childbirth
  • Forbidden to make personal choices of their lives

What can we do?

There are many ways we can contribute to voice out for women’s rights, not just today, but in our daily lives!

  • Raise your voice – can be among friends and family
  • Support one another
  • Educate the next generation
  • Know your rights
  • Give to the cause
  • Get involved – whether in local campaigns or worldwide campaigns
